Attention all Wal-Mart shoppers:

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A 16-year-old boy who police said made an announcement at Walmart ordering all black people in a southern New Jersey store to leave was charged with harassment and bias intimidation, authorities said Saturday.

The boy, whose name is not being released because he is a juvenile, grabbed one of the courtesy phones at Walmart’s Washington Township store Sunday evening and calmly announced: “Attention, Walmart customers: All black people, leave the store now,” police said.

Oh yeah, congratulations to me for making 500 [worthy] posts.

Common weedkiller turns male frogs into females

Ever seen a dude turn into a chick?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Atrazine, one of the most commonly used and controversial weedkillers, can turn male frogs into females, researchers reported on Monday.

The experiment is the first to show such complete effects of atrazine, which had been known to disrupt hormones and which is one of the chief suspects in the decline of amphibians such as frogs around the world.

The chemical had been shown to disrupt development and make frogs develop both male and female features — termed hermaphroditism. This study of 40 male frogs shows the process can go even further, Hayes said.

The European Union banned atrazine in 2004. The finding may add pressure to the United States to more closely regulate the chemical, used widely in agriculture.

“Approximately 80 million pounds (36,287 tonnes) are applied annually in the United States alone, and atrazine is the most common pesticide contaminant of ground and surface water,” the researchers wrote.

I’m not even mad. That’s amazing. But honestly, what the fuck?

Pope Benedict criticises UK equality legislation

Pope Benedict has criticised the Equality Bill, currently going through Parliament, claiming it ‘violates the natural law’.

Church leaders are said to be worried that the bill might expose them to legal challenges if they refuse to employ openly gay people or transsexuals.

The Pope has confirmed that he will visit Britain later this year – the first papal visit to the UK since John Paul II’s in 1982.

Is It This Easy to Pull Straight Nude Pics From Airport Scanners? [NSFW]

Link: Is It This Easy to Pull Straight Nude Pics From Airport Scanners? [NSFW]

The Drudge Report has an image of a woman from an airport scanner up right now. It’s scandalous enough as is, but it’s shockingly easy to make it look even more like a normal nude photograph.

stuffaboutminneapolis:

A man who’s been convicted of six DWIs has been arrested again, this time for allegedly driving drunk on a snowmobile.

State police arrested 50-year-old Brian Holmstrom after he got stuck in the snow on Highway 169 in Shakopee on Christmas Eve morning.

It was just before 8 a.m. when a trooper tried to help, only to smell alcohol.

Student Killed By Exploding Chewing Gum

Link: Student Killed By Exploding Chewing Gum

A 25-year-old student in the Ukraine has been killed by an exploding stick of chewing gum, according to the Russian news agency Ria Novosti.

The student, who attended Ukraine’s Kiev Polytechnic Institute and remains unidentified, was apparently working at his parents’ house when the incident occurred.

“A loud pop was heard from the student’s room,” a police officer explained, according to USA Today. “When his relatives entered the room they saw that the lower part of the young man’s face had been blown off.”

In terms of what might have caused the incident, the Telegraph says the student was apparently working on an experiment and had covered the gum in a chemical solution, possible some type of explosive, before trying to chew it. Ria Novosti reports that the student had the highly unusual habit of chewing gum that he had dipped into citric acid. Police believe the student may have confused the chemical packets he had applied to the gum before chewing.

Palin popular among fans of Limbaugh and Beck

Link: Palin popular among fans of Limbaugh and Beck

Sarah Palin may or may not run for president in 2012, but she is already the overwhelming favorite in the Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck primaries.

Almost half of all Republican and GOP-leaning independents alike said they think Palin has had a good effect on their party, compared with 20 percent who think she has had a negative effect. Eighty percent of Limbaugh listeners and 70 percent of Beck viewers said she has had a positive impact.

Nearly all Republicans have sympathy for Palin for the treatment she has received from the news media since she burst onto the national stage as John McCain’s vice presidential running mate last year. Overall, 87 percent said the media have treated her unfairly.

There is, however, no middle ground for Palin. As much as she is liked by many Republicans, she is disliked almost as strongly by many independents. In a pair of focus groups conducted in Aurora, Colo., recently — one with Republicans and the other with independents — Palin provoked strong and conflicting opinions, as she does in national polling.

I’m not really sure if this news or not… but it’s definitely something we already knew. Regardless, the outlook for Palin isn’t exactly bleak, but it’s also not very good. And I can’t say I’m upset.

I’m just happy the crazies are constistent and we can generally classify them together. It’s a full moon tonight!

Somali woman stoned for adultery

A 20-year-old woman divorcee accused of committing adultery in Somalia has been stoned to death by Islamists in front of a crowd of about 200 people.

A judge working for the militant group al-Shabab said she had had an affair with an unmarried 29-year-old man.

He said she gave birth to a still-born baby and was found guilty of adultery. Her boyfriend was given 100 lashes.

AP Reports Palin’s Book Innacurate

Link: AP Reports Palin’s Book Innacurate

Former Alaska Governor lashed out at the Associated Press Sunday for doing a fact-check on her memoir, “Going Rogue.”

“Amazingly, but not surprisingly, the AP somehow nabbed a copy of the book before it was released,” she wrote on her Facebook page. “They’re now erroneously reporting on the book’s contents and are repeating many of the same things they spewed during the campaign and afterwards. We’ve heard 11 writers are engaged in this opposition research, er, “fact checking” research!”

The AP reported that Palin’s account often contradicted her record as well as current events. Her depiction of the McCain campaign is also frequently at odds with internal campaign emails.

Brother of Afghan Leader On C.I.A. Payroll

Link: Brother of Afghan Leader On C.I.A. Payroll

KABUL, Afghanistan — Ahmed Wali Karzai, the brother of the Afghan president and a suspected player in the country’s booming illegal opium trade, gets regular payments from the Central Intelligence Agency, and has for much of the past eight years, according to current and former American officials.

The agency pays Mr. Karzai for a variety of services, including helping to recruit an Afghan paramilitary force that operates at the C.I.A.’s direction in and around the southern city of Kandahar, Mr. Karzai’s home.

Awful hard to rid the country of a lucritive drug trade that finances world-wide terrorism if you’re financing a major player who’s involved with it.

Iraq: 85,000 Civilians Killed from 2004-2008

Link: Iraq: 85,000 Civilians Killed from 2004-2008

BAGHDAD – Iraq’s government said at least 85,000 people were killed from 2004 to 2008, officially answering one of the biggest questions of the conflict — how many perished in the sectarian violence that nearly led to a civil war.

What remains unanswered is how many died in the 2003 U.S. invasion and in the months of chaos that followed it.

A report by the Human Rights Ministry said 85,694 people were killed from the beginning of 2004 to Oct. 31, 2008 and 147,195 were wounded. The figures included Iraqi civilians, military and police but did not cover U.S. military deaths, insurgents, or foreigners, including contractors. And it did not include the first months of the war after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

This report is staggering indeed and incredibly tragic. However, many feel that the first year was by far the worst. To give you a better idea of the real body count, here are some well respected third-party opinions, here’s a screenshot from Wikipedia:

U.S. Can’t Trace Foreign Visitors on Expired Visas

Link: U.S. Can’t Trace Foreign Visitors on Expired Visas

Eight years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and despite repeated mandates from Congress, the United States still has no reliable system for verifying that foreign visitors [on expired visas] have left the country.

I don’t think many people realize how important it is for the country to stay on top of this. Last year alone, 2.9 million foreign visitors on temporary visas officially entered the country, but never officially checked out. Terrorism is only the tip of the iceberg for this issue, and we need to use the technologies we already know to solve the issue. Not that difficult—but too much work to change the system. Typical.

The Politics of Spite

If you haven’t read Paul Krugman’s column in the NYTimes from earlier this week, do it now. Excerpt:

There was what President Obama likes to call a teachable moment last week, when the International Olympic Committee rejected Chicago’s bid to be host of the 2016 Summer Games.

“Cheers erupted” at the headquarters of the conservative Weekly Standard, according to a blog post by a member of the magazine’s staff, with the headline “Obama loses! Obama loses!” Rush Limbaugh declared himself “gleeful.” “World Rejects Obama,” gloated the Drudge Report. And so on.

So what did we learn from this moment? For one thing, we learned that the modern conservative movement, which dominates the modern Republican Party, has the emotional maturity of a bratty 13-year-old.

Judge accused of sex with inmates

Link: Judge accused of sex with inmates

The trial of a former US judge accused of having sex with male inmates in exchange for leniency is set to start in Mobile, Alabama.

Herman Thomas, 48, denies the charges, which include sodomy, kidnapping, extortion, sex abuse and assault.

Up to 15 current and former prisoners are set to testify against him at the jury trial.
He was once the Democratic Party’s choice to be the first black federal judge in south Alabama.

Mr Thomas resigned as a judge in 2007 following allegations that he spanked inmates in his private office at the county courthouse with a paddle.

I’m just going to go ahead and sort of…. assume that he suddenly WASN’T the Democratic Party’s choice to be the first black federal judge in south Alabama. Those inmates just looked so tasty, he couldn’t contain is sodomistic urges.

He does look like a pretty nice guy though. Wait, did you just touch my butt?

Senate Panel Rejects of Public Option in Health Plan

Link: Senate Panel Rejects of Public Option in Health Plan

WASHINGTON — After a half-day of animated debate, the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday rejected efforts by liberal Democrats to add a government-run health insurance plan to major health care legislation, dealing the first official setback to an idea that many Democrats, including President Obama, say they support.

There are more than enough sources on the internet that anyone can read that explain why the public option was possibly the most crucial element of health care reform.

Advocates of a public plan say it would provide crucial competition for private insurers and that the larger goals of the legislation, to extend coverage to more than 30 million uninsured Americans and to slow the steep rise in health care costs, cannot be achieved without it. I tend to agree with them—and I’ll go a step further. If there was indeed one part of the country that was turned into an actual socialized sector, health care is that one sector. Otherwise, 45,000 people will die each year, according to multiple sources. So I guess a congratulations are in order?
