Brother of Afghan Leader On C.I.A. Payroll

KABUL, Afghanistan — Ahmed Wali Karzai, the brother of the Afghan president and a suspected player in the country’s booming illegal opium trade, gets regular payments from the Central Intelligence Agency, and has for much of the past eight years, according to current and former American officials.

The agency pays Mr. Karzai for a variety of services, including helping to recruit an Afghan paramilitary force that operates at the C.I.A.’s direction in and around the southern city of Kandahar, Mr. Karzai’s home.

Awful hard to rid the country of a lucritive drug trade that finances world-wide terrorism if you’re financing a major player who’s involved with it.

Iraq: 85,000 Civilians Killed from 2004-2008

BAGHDAD – Iraq’s government said at least 85,000 people were killed from 2004 to 2008, officially answering one of the biggest questions of the conflict — how many perished in the sectarian violence that nearly led to a civil war.

What remains unanswered is how many died in the 2003 U.S. invasion and in the months of chaos that followed it.

A report by the Human Rights Ministry said 85,694 people were killed from the beginning of 2004 to Oct. 31, 2008 and 147,195 were wounded. The figures included Iraqi civilians, military and police but did not cover U.S. military deaths, insurgents, or foreigners, including contractors. And it did not include the first months of the war after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

This report is staggering indeed and incredibly tragic. However, many feel that the first year was by far the worst. To give you a better idea of the real body count, here are some well respected third-party opinions, here’s a screenshot from Wikipedia:

Good work Bush. Advice to Obama—do not continue the trend.

Poll: Pakistanis oppose Taliban, still revile US

Link: Poll: Pakistanis oppose Taliban, still revile US

While Pakistan has found the surge in Taliban militants who attack their lands and cities to be an oath of war, it seems as though over the past decade, Americans have done something of the same. Great foreign policy work on our part. Fail again—

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistanis’ views on the Taliban have shifted dramatically in the past year, with 70 percent now opposing the militants, a poll released Thursday said. The United States doesn’t fare well either, with 64 percent of Pakistanis seeing Washington as an enemy.
